Solution:
Yes you can use substitution string in templates and library objects. Templates and library objects follow the same rules with regard to substitution tags as genies do. For example - say you have a template that has three buttons on it. Now enter %tag% into the text field of each button. If you create a page linked to that template and double click on any of the buttons you will only get a single form asking for 'Tag'.
