Summary: |
Allen-Bradley have a number of different communications methods / networks that are used for different purposes. What are they and do we support them? |
Solution: |
The Allen-Bradley networks consist of:
Serial (DF1 protocol)A low speed serial protocol. Supported using Citect's KE driver. Remote I/OA 'Universal' network aimed at connecting remote I/O chassis and other intelligent devices to PLCs. There is no Citect support for this network other than via the PLCs themselves. DeviceNetA low level network that provides connections between simple industrial devices (eg sensors and actuators) to higher level devices such (eg PLCs and computers). Data Highway PlusA local area network designed to support remote programming, but is also used in data acquisition applications. The following Citect drivers support DH+: ABTCP/CIKT and ABKT. Data Highway 485A local area network designed for factory floor applications. Supported using Citect's ABKT driver. While Citect's ABTCP/CIKT combination can be used with DH+ and the KTX and KTXD cards, DH-485 is not supported using the ABTCP/CIKT combination. ControlNetA mid level network providing high speed communications while still providing the functionality for peer-to-peer, deterministic, and high throughput applications. ControlNet may supersede DH+ as it becomes more popular. ControlNet is currently supported by a) Citect's ABRSLINX driver, and b) indirectly using Citect's OPC Client driver. The Citect ABRSLINX driver requires the use of Rockwell Software's RSLinx OEM product, and is available from Ci Technologies FTP site, or Citect Support. The Citect OPC client driver can be used to communicate using ControlNet via the OPC standard using the SST ControlNet card. Contact SST for more information on SST's ControlNet & OPC solutions. Ethernet (TCP/IP using CSP protocol)A high level network typically used primarily for SCADA systems, it provides for the data acquisition demands required in large systems. The ControlLogix does not support the CSP protocol, but rather the EPIC protocol. The following Citect drivers support the ethernet communications: ABTCP/TCPIP and ABEI. Ethernet (TCP/IP using EPIC protocol)A new high level network typically used primarily for SCADA systems, it provides for the data acquisition demands required in large systems. Citect's Ethernet (TCP/IP) driver for most AB processors, called ABTCP, uses the CSP protocol and cannot be used with the EPIC protocol. The use of Citect's ABRSLINX driver, which supports the EPIC protocol, is therefore recommended for use with the ControlLogix. The Citect ABRSLINX driver requires the use of Rockwell Software's RSLinx OEM product (Version1.70.57 or later). |
