Summary:
Is it possible to communicate from Citect over a TCP/IP Ethernet LAN to a gateway which has an IP address and converts the signal to serial which in turn is connected to PLCs? 

Solution:
Yes. A possible solution is to use Stallion's LantraServer as the 'Gateway'. It will allow you to create a virtual COM port on the Citect I/O Server which is redirected over the Ethernet TCP/IP network to the gateway, and then via the normal serial connection to the device (eg. PLC etc.).
