Summary:
CTAPI incorrectly returns the "DESC" field for analog alarms. Analog alarms are not able to have descriptions, so the "DESC" field should normally be blank. For display purposes Citect has traditionally filled the "DESC" field of an analog alarm with the value of the "SUMSTATE" field, so that analog & digital alarms can be placed in the one category without losing information. For CTAPI based clients this moving around of data could cause significant problems. 

Solution:
CIT has confirmed this to be a problem in Citect for Windows versions 5.21. This problem has been fixed in version 5.21 Service Pack E.

Querying the "DESC" field of an analog alarm from CTAPI will always return NULL string.
