What are enterprise numbers and how are they used? |
Solution: |
The SNMP (Simple Network Management
Protocol) MIB tree has parts which are universal and reflect
various RFC standards. i.e. each SNMP enabled device supports the
common lot of these functions, e.g. sysDescr or .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0
under mib-2-system to return the name of the device.
When users want to return data specific to their device, this is done under the iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises path or under .1.3.6.1.4.1.x x is the unique number assigned to an organisation or piece of equipment. Microsoft's number is 311, i.e. anything under .1.3.6.1.4.1.311.y is a Microsoft MIB item. Citect's number is 6216 These enterprise numbers are needed in a global WAN so that every unique piece of equipment in the world, can be identified. In a private network, you can essentially use any enterprise number you wish. New numbers can be obtained from http://www.iana.org/cgi-bin/enterprise.pl Citect users may wish to use this number when generating user defined traps. .1.3.6.1.4.1.6216.1.x is reserved by Citect for their internal use and testing. Users are free to use .1.3.6.1.4.1.6216.2.y , .1.3.6.1.4.1.6216.3.y etc. |
