I am using a gateway with multiple devices connected on a daisy chain. When I swich off one device some other devices go offline but some others stay online.
Solution:
 
If you use a gateway you need to make sure that the driver timeout is larger than the gateway timeout.

In this case the driver in use was MODNET communicating via a Mobus TCP/IP to Modbus gateway device.
