Summary:
If Windows runs out of physical memory it may crash to the DOS prompt. Windows may exit to the DOS prompt, or just hang with a black screen and frozen cursor. If you have just upgraded from Windows to Windows for Workgroups 3.11, your computer may crash due to low physical memory. This could happen because Windows for Workgroups 3.11 uses more memory than Windows 3.1 and your computer may go over the memory limit. 

Solution:
Free up more physical memory or add memory to the computer. You can free up more physical memory by reducing the size of the SMARTDRV cache, or unloading other programs. Adding extra virtual memory will not improve this problem - you need real physical memory.
