Summary:
Question: I want to be able to dial in to my Citect LAN and have exactly the same control and access as a normal LAN Citect Station?

Solution:
You can get full access to you LAN (including normal Citect control) with one of the following products:
  • 3Com Access Server (also called Centrum Remote)
  • Shiva LanRover
  • Windows for WorkGroups 3.11 RAS service
  • Windows NT RAS service

Other products may provide this service, however only the products listed above have been tested with Citect.

These products have the following features:

3Com Access Server (also called Centrum Remote)

  • 1 Ethernet connection (BNC or AUI or RJ45)
  • 4 or 8 RS232 Serial Connections. (This will allow support of up to 8 remote users.)
  • If you have 4 serial ports, the maximum baud rate is 115.2k. If you have the 8 port version, the maximum baud rate is 64k. This box only supports dial in. It is a MAC Layer bridge/router which means it should support any protocol.

Shiva LanRover

  • 1 Ethernet Connection (BNC or AUI or RJ45)
  • 4 or 8 RS232 Serial Connections. (This will allow support of up to 8 remote users.)
  • This box will only support 64k maximum baud rate in either the 8 or 4 port systems.
  • It is protocol dependent. This means it has specific drivers written for Windows for Workgroups, Novell Netware etc but can support all of these protocols at one time.
  • It supports dial in and dial out. This means that any of the users on the network can also use the RS232 ports to dial out from the LAN to connect to another service of some type.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 RAS service

  • Supports 1 remote user only.
  • This provides limited access to the LAN because this service will only connect in a point to point manner (i.e. you can only access the computer where the RAS service is running). This feature is not provided in the standard release of Windows for Workgroups. It can be obtained from Microsoft.
  • It is a good low cost solution for a small Citect systems.

Windows NT RAS service

  • LAN connection as per the computer where the Windows NT is running.
  • Up to 64 ports with Digiboards or other 3rd party serial boards supported by NT drivers.
  • If you have existing Windows NT servers, this may be an easy solution.
