In this example we will install version
3.40 (16bit) and version 4.20 (32bit) on Windows 95. Before you
proceed please read Knowledgebase article Q1864: "Can I install 16 and 32 bit versions of
citect on the one computer"
This guide is just a more detailed step by step help guide This
procedure can be done in principle on Windows NT. Many of the
"shortcut" procedures will be different however. Obviously you
cannot install the 32 bit version of Citect on WFW 3.11.
1. Delete the current version of Citect.
1.1 In the Citect Project editor make sure that you backup any
projects you wish to save. Important, use Citect's backup / restore
function. It is easiest to create a small directory with several
sub directories on the hard disk instead of backing up each project
on a floppy disk.
1.2 Delete the directory "C:\Citect" and all directories beneath
it:"BBS", "BIN", "DATA", "USER".
1.3 Delete the "C:\KT" directory. This directory will exist if
you have installed version 3.xx previously.
1.4 In the "\Windows" directory delete the Citect.INI file. This
is very important. If you leave this file in. The new installation
may try to use this file with erratic results.
1.5 In the "\Windows" directory delete any CTDRAWxx.INI
file.
1.6 Delete the Citect file folder from the start menu. To do
this use the Explorer to go to "Windows\Start Menu\Programs", then
delete the Citect file folder.
1.7 Delete any Citect file folders or shortcuts from the
desktop.
For other information read Knowledgebase article Q1380:"How do I delete Citect from my
Computer".
2. Install version 3.40
2.1 Start installation of version 3.40.
2.2 You should see very shortly a window titled:
"AskPath"
? Please enter directory for installation.
C:\CITECT
2.3 Instead of clicking on OK as you normally do, Change the
directory to:
C:\CITECT3
Now click on "OK".
Citect will be installed to the "\CITECT3" directory instead of the
"\CITECT" directory.
2.4 At the end of the installation you will see a window asking
you if you want to read the "Readme" file. It is a good idea to
read it now.
2.5 Then, you will see a window titled "Citect" with five
shortcuts inside: "Citect", "Project Editor", "Graphics Builder",
"Citect Node Setup", and "Readme". Close this window. You will make
the same folder later and put it on the Windows Desktop.
2.6 You have now finished the normal installation of Citect
version 3.40.
3. Change the name of the CITECT.INI file
Change the name of the Citect.INI file to Citect3.INI, change
the name of the folder on the start menu to "Citect3", make a new
Folder for "Citect3" and set it on the Windows Desktop. insure that
all icons in this shortcut point to the correct ".ini" file.
3.1 Using Explorer, go to the "\Windows" directory and copy the
file "Citect.INI" to an "archive" directory. It is always good to
have a copy of the original installation "CITECT.INI" file in case
the current file is corrupted or changed improperly.
3.2 Using Explorer go to the "\Windows" directory and RENAME the
file "Citect.INI" to "Citect3.INI".
3.3 Using Explorer go to "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs". You
will see a newly created File Folder named "Citect".
3.4 Rename the folder to "Citect3". Hint: use the right mouse to
pull up the proper dialog window.
3.5 Make sure that the folder "Citect3" is selected (blue
background) and copy this folder. You can do this by selecting
[Edit.Copy] from the explorer menu, or right mouse and "copy", or
just [Ctrl]+C.
3.6 Now go to the "Windows Desktop" and paste this folder on the
"desktop". You can do this many ways, the easiest way: Go to
"\Windows\Desktop" and select [File.Paste].
3.7 Go directly to the "Windows Desktop" and click on the folder
"Citect3". You will notice the following Shortcuts: "Citect",
"Project Editor", "Graphics Builder", "Citect Node Setup", and
"Readme". This folder is like the old groups in windows 3.11.
3.8 SINGLE CLICK to select the Project Editor. We do not want to
enter the project editor until we have changed the ".INI" file
used. In other words we will be modifying the "Target" of the
Project Editor "Shortcut".
3.9 Now press [ALT]+[ENTER] to display the "Project Editor
Properties". (You can also use [ALT]+ Double Click.)
3.10 You will see now two tabs: "General" and "Shortcut". Single
Click on "Shortcut". You should now see a field titled "Target"
with the following information:
C:\CITECT3\BIN\CTEDIT.EXE
3.11 Change this line so that we use our new Citect3.INI
file:
C:\CITECT3\BIN\CTEDIT.EXE /iCITECT3.INI
Note: The "/i" means use a new ".INI" file. There is a one space
between ".EXE" and "/i". There is NO space between the "/i" and
"CITECT3.INI"
Remember the "CITECT3.INI" file is in the "\Windows"
directory.
For more information see Knowledgebase topic: Q1173 "How to use another INI file instead of
Citect.INI"
3.12 Do the same for the following shortcuts: "Graphics
Builder", "Citect", and "Citect Node Setup".
3.13 Double Click on the Project Editor shortcut. The first
window you will see is:
"Confirmation"
? about to upgrade all projects. If you cancel upgrading now you
may perform upgrading in the future by setting [CtEdit]Upgrade INI
variable.
Do you wish to upgrade now?
Select yes. This may take about a minute.
3.14 Create a new project titled "Example" and restore the
version 3 "example" project. Compile and run the project. After you
have run the project, shutdown Citect, close the Project editor and
go to the "Citect3" folder.
3.15 Double Click on the Citect Node Setup Icon. When this
starts up notice that the Windows title is:
"Citect Node Setup - C:\WINDOWS\CITECT3.INI".
IF you CANNOT enter the Citect node setup, then you will see a
window like:
Error 3304
! CANNOT OPEN \MASTER.DBF
Many of Citect Node Setup's features will not be available
Check:
1-XBS110.DLL is in the same directory as CTNODE.EXE
2-MASTER.DBF is in the directory specified in
C:\WINDOWS\CITECT3.INI [CTEdit] User.
There can be many causes for this:
- You did not rename Citect.INI to Citect3.INI Part of the
Citect3.INI file is missing or corrupted. The paths under the
"[CTEDIT]" section in the Citect3.INI file are wrong. Listed below
are the proper settings.
BIN=C:\CITECT3\BIN
USER=C:\CITECT3\USER
DATA=C:\CITECT3\DATA
3.16 Select the "Express" tab and the "Stand Alone Computer"
option.If you see:
Project: Example
I/O Server: IOServer
then everything is OK. If you did not install and run the
example project you will probably see a different project. Now you
can exit the node setup without saving any changes.
3.17 The Version 3.40 installation and ".INI" redirection is
complete. Now you can install Version 4.20
4. Install version 4.20
4.1 Start installation of version 3.40.
4.2 You should see very shortly a window which tells you that
"Setup is preparing the InstallShield Wizard which will guide you
through the rest of the setup process. Please wait."
4.3 The next window is the "Welcome" window. Click "Next".
4.4 The next window is "Select Installation Directory". Now we
will select a new installation directory than normal. Click
"Browse".
4.5 The next window is "Choose Directory". In the "Path" field
you should see:
C:\CITECT
4.6 Change the path to
C:\CITECT4
Then click on "OK".
4.7 The next window is "Setup" states that the new directory
'C:\CITECT4' does not exist. Click "Yes".
4.8 You are now back at the "Select Installation Directory".
Click "Next". Now the installation program will run for several
minutes.
4.9 When the installation progress "bargraph" is at 99% a new
window will appear: "Shortcut Folder Selection". You will see a
field titled "Program Folder:" which contains:
Citect
4.10 Change the "Program Folder" to
Citect4
and Click "Next".
4.11 At the end of the installation you will see a window asking
you if you want to read the "Readme" file. It is a good idea to
read it now.
4.12 Then, you will see a window titled "Citect4" with five
shortcust inside: "Citect", "Project Editor", "Graphics Builder",
"Citect Node Setup", and "Readme". Close this window.
4.13 You have now finished the normal installation of Citect
version 4.20.
5. Make a new "Desktop Folder" for "Citect4",
5.1 Using Explorer go to the "\Windows" directory and copy the
file "Citect.INI" to an "archive" directory. It is always good to
have a copy of the original installation "CITECT.INI" file in case
the current file is corrupted or changed improperly. Remeber, don't
copy over the version 3 Citect.INI file that you created!
5.2 Using Explorer go to "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs". You
will see a newly created File Folder named "Citect4".
5.3 Make sure that the folder "Citect4" is selected (blue
background" and copy this folder.
5.4 Now go to the "Windows Desktop" and paste this folder on the
"desktop". You can do this many ways, the easiest way: Go to
"\Windows\Desktop" and select [File.Paste].
5.5 Go directly to the "Windows Desktop" and click on the folder
"Citect4". You will notice the following Shortcuts: "Citect",
"Project Editor", "Graphics Builder", "Citect Node Setup", and
"Readme". This folder is like the old groups in windows 3.11.
5.6 Now you have two completely separate Citect installations on
the same computer. Citect version 3 is in the "C:\CITECT3"
directory. All the shortcuts in the "Citect3" folder point to the
file:
"\Windows\Citect3.INI".
Citect version 4 is in the "C:\CITECT4" directory.
All the shortcuts in the "Citect4" folder point to the file:
"\Windows\Citect.INI".
5.7 If you want to rename the "Citect.INI" file to "Citect4.INI"
for consistency, do not forget to change all the targets on your
shortcuts in the "Citect4" folder. For example the target for your
Project Editor shortcut should read:
C:\CITECT4\BIN\CTEDIT32.EXE /iCITECT4.INI
I would recommend doing this so that there is no chance of
confusion in the future.
5.8 Additional Note. All version 4 projects will be completely
separate from the version 3 projects. If you want both versions to
access the same project database see the Knowledgebase topic 1864:
