Adding a CIMPLICITY HMI Logger Data Source

With the Administration application, you can configure CIMPLICITY Logger as a Proficy Portal historical data source by opening the Historical folder and selecting the CIMPLICITY HMI Logger node. The Administration application displays the following fields:

CIMPLICITY HMI Logger Data Source Properties

Property

Description

Logical name

Specifies the name for the data source. This name need not be the actual name of the CIMPLICITY server you are connecting to.

MSDE or CIMPLICITY SQL

Allows you to configure settings for MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine)/CIMPLICITY SQL databases.

Advanced

Allows you to configure settings for other CIMPLICITY database logging databases, such as Oracle or MS SQL Server.

Settings for MSDE or CIMPLICITY SQL

Database Computer Name

Specifies the host name of the computer the database is running on.

User Name

Specifies the login name to use when connecting to the database.

Password

Specifies the password to use when connecting to the database.

Database URL

Displays the URL of the database. For display purposes only.

Database Time Zone

CIMPLICITY records time stamps in the local time zone of the project. Use this drop-down list to indicate (to Proficy Portal) which time zone CIMPLICITY is using. Select the Data Server Time Zone option if the CIMPLICITY project is using the same local time zone as the Proficy Portal server.

NOTE: If you have multiple CIMPLICITY projects logging to the same database and the projects have different time zones, you must configure a separate data source for each project so that Proficy Portal will recognize the different time zones.

Settings for Advanced

Driver

Select the database driver to use.

URL Syntax

Displays the URL Syntax for the database connection. This field cannot be edited.

Example URL

Displays an example URL using the URL syntax. This field cannot be edited.

User Name

Specifies the username to use when connecting to the CIMPLICITY server.

Password

Specifies the password to use when connecting to the CIMPLICITY server.

Database URL

Specifies the URL of the database. Use the the text in the URL Syntax and Example URL fields to help you enter the exact URL you require.

Database Time Zone

Specifies the default time zone of the CIMPLICITY projects that are connecting to the database.

Has "msec" Column

Select to indicate whether your CIMPLICITY database logging has been configured to store the timestamp milliseconds in a separate "msec" column. This setting is used only with the Advanced configuration.

"msec" Column Name

Specifies the name of the separate column used to store the timestamp milliseconds. This setting is used only with the Advanced configuration.

See the following for detailed procedures:

To add a CIMPLICITY HMI Logger connector using the MSDE/CIMPLICITY SQL driver | To add a CIMPLICITY HMI Logger connector using a non-MSDE/CIMPLICITY SQL driver

To add a CIMPLICITY HMI Logger connector using the MSDE/CIMPLICITY SQL driver

If the data source you are adding is not for an MSDE or CIMPLICITY SQL database (for example, the data source is MS SQL Server or Oracle), refer to To add a CIMPLICITY HMI Logger connector using a non-MSDE/CIMPLICITY SQL driver.

  1. In the Proficy Portal client application, click the Administration button on the main toolbar. The Administration application appears.

  2. Click the Connectors & Data Sources button. A directory tree appears.

  3. Expand the Historical folder and click the CIMPLICITY HMI Logger node in this folder. The Add New CIMPLICITY HMI Logger Data Source window appears.

  4. In the Logical Name field, enter the name of the data source.

  5. Select the MSDE or CIMPLICITY SQL option.

  6. In the Database Computer Name field, enter the host name of the computer that the database is running on.

  7. In the User Name field, enter the user name that is required to connect to the database.

  8. In the Password field, enter the password needed to connect to the database.

  9. Select the Database Time Zone of the CIMPLICITY projects that are logging into the database.

  10. If your CIMPLICITY database logging has been configured to store the timestamp milliseconds in a separate "msec" column, select the Has "msec" Column check box.

    • If you selected the Has "msec" Column check box, enter the column name in the "msec" Column Name field.

  11. Click the Apply button to save your changes. The Test, Copy, Remove, and Reset Browse Cache buttons appear.

  12. Click the Test button to see if your connection is functioning properly. You will receive a message that the data source test passed or that it failed. If the test passed, you are ready to retrieve data. If the test failed, refer to Verifying a CIMPLICITY Logger Connection.

To add a CIMPLICITY HMI Logger connector using a non-MSDE/CIMPLICITY SQL driver

This procedure applies to data sources such as MS SQL Server, Oracle, or DB2. If the data source you are adding is for an MSDE or CIMPLICITY SQL database, refer to To add a CIMPLICITY HMI Logger connector using the MSDE/CIMPLICITY SQL driver.

  5. Select the Advanced option.

  6. From the Driver list, select the driver name. The URL Syntax and Example URL fields are filled in automatically (from the JDBC Configuration Utility).

  7. In the User Name field, enter the user name you will connect to the database with.

  8. In the Password field, enter the password you will connect to the database with.

  9. In the Database URL field, enter the URL of the database you are connecting to. You can use the URL Syntax and Example URL fields to help you determine the URL.

  10. Select the Database Time Zone for the CIMPLICITYserver.

  11. If the CIMPLICITY database returns a msec column, select the Has "msec" Column check box and enter the column's name.

  12. Click the Apply button to save your changes. The Test, Copy, Remove, and Reset Browse Cache buttons appear.

  13. Click the Test button to see if your connection is functioning properly. You will receive a message that the data source test passed or that it failed. If the test passed, you are ready to retrieve data. If the test failed, refer to Verifying a CIMPLICITY Logger Connection.
